United Way launches community center in Overtown

The United Way of Miami-Dade opened the doors to their Eden Place at the Overtown Youth Center in Miami, Saturday.

More than 200 people came out to the opening event where they enjoyed food, fun and entertainment.

Former Miami Heat star Alonzo Mourning was on hand to talk about the importance of having a location like the Eden Place for kids. “A better home environment will help contribute to a better atmosphere for our young people,” he said. “We know that about 90 percent of these kids come from single parent homes so many of the parents need assistance”

The center will provide resources for families to be more involved in their children’s education and in their community.
