Local lawyers hit basketball court alongside ‘Zo’ in Overtown

MIAMI (WSVN) — Court was in session for some South Florida lawyers Saturday, and their star witness was an NBA legend.

Former Heat center Alonzo Mourning hosted the first annual Zo Hoop-Law Madness to benefit the Overtown Youth Center. “Alonzo Mourning is the founder of the Overtown Youth Center, really the man behind the mission and the vision here,” said the center’s director, Tina Brown. “[He] really created this place as a safe haven for young people growing up in this community.”

Attorneys from Miami’s top law firms hit the court to raise money for the cities at-risk youth who come to the center to do something positive. “They did a little fundraiser for us. We have fun, we do basketball, dance,” said center member Quinton Mayo.

Emceeing the event was WSVN sports anchor Donovan Campbell, and he brought the fun. “Anytime Alonzo Mourning calls upon you to do something, you want to help him out,” he said. “What he’s been able to do for the past 11 years for this facility, the Overtown Youth Center, and this community was great, so the fact that I grew up here in South Florida, and he asked me to come here, was a no-brainer. I had to be a part of this.”

The three-on-three tournament consisted of 32 teams made up of attorneys and their staff, all out for some friendly competition. “It’s my first time here today, and I’m really impressed by all the great things they’re doing, and the facilities are really very nice,” said lawyer Mike Mena.

“I rarely get a chance come down to this area, but seeing that all this is growing here is really a great sign for Miami,” said lawyer Jonathan Dunleavy.

It’s also a great sign for the kids who feel as if the Overtown Youth Center is a home away from home. The event is expected to raise $50,000.
