Parent Involvement

This program is designed to improve parental effectiveness by providing a clear parenting philosophy and a set of skills and strategies that can be used immediately to address a variety of child-rearing challenges and problems.

Direct parent involvement in the program is expected to enhance parent-child interactions and social support among parents, and consequently promote children school readiness and social adjustment. We believe that the school system and additional academic support are two of the most important elements needed in a young child’s life, and are essential for successful positive development. It’s critical for every parent to become involved in a child’s schooling and assist them in making the most of their education. It can be easy to assume that the education of the children is the responsibility of the schools; however education is most successful when parents and schools work together. If parents maintain a close connection to the school and encourage additional learning outside of school, parents will give their children the necessary tools and skills needed for them to become successful.

Overtown Youth Center makes a substantial effort to involve parents in the educational component of their children’s lives. Parents of the children that attend our program have to commit to attending school PTA Meetings, Parent Teacher Conferences, Volunteer when possible, and attend our monthly parent meetings and workshops. It is an obligation of the parents to ensure that their children attend OYC 4 days a week, 85% of the time.
