OYC hosts a six-week summer program designed to maintain and/or increase students’ knowledge and motivation, with the understanding that children’s scholastic levels can decrease during long vacations. OYC provides daily physical activities, creative arts, community service, character-building and regular field trips to venues where children can be exposed to different types of environments and experiences. During the summer, OYC’s high school students also study for exams, apply for college entrance, attend financial aid workshops, complete internships and/or work jobs. The summer culminates with a summer showcase that displays students varying talents.
Each year, OYC students and staff prepare for a full theatrical, broadway-style production during the center’s six-week summer program. In addition to learning scripts and choreography, students help design the set, inclusive of props and the stage backdrop. To date, OYC students have performed their versions of “Welcome to Hollywood,” “The Wiz” and “The Lion King.” Stay tuned for updates on the next OYC production.
