South Florida non-profits give Thanksgiving meals to needy

MIAMI (WSVN) — It’s Thanksgiving, and South Florida is busy giving to those in need.

The morning kicked off with the Mourning Family Foundation surprising 10 needy families with a Thanksgiving meal, in Overtown. “For me, this is a big help. We didn’t have a turkey until now,” said Samantha Exavier. “Thank you. I appreciate this.”

Founder of the Mourning Family Foundation, Alonzo Mourning, believes that Thanksgiving is a time to give back. “With things like this, not only do we create awareness to the community and help them understand the importance of giving back, but we also put smiles on people’s faces and create hope and encouragement to let them know that someone out here does care about their well being,” he said.

In another part of the county, Miami-Dade County School Board police officers made a special meal delivery to a single mother of five.

Over at Camillus House, more than 70 volunteers served a traditional Thanksgiving meal. They even had help from another former star athlete. “This means a lot. I think today is a special day,” said former Chicago Club slugger Sammy Sosa. “My wife and I are able to share this moment and make sure everyone has a very good meal and a good laugh.”

More than 600 people received meals like these. This is has been a tradition Camillus House has been helping our community for more than 55 years.

And you can’t have a Thanksgiving without some salsa. The Kiwanis Club of Little Havana has that covered with a delicious buffet. “For me, it’s very good,” said Sarah Pantin. “The dancing, the eating, I like it. I’m from Cuba.”

And to wrap things up, over in Hollywood, The Miami Rescue Mission and Broward Outreach Centers are giving the homeless a lot to be thankful for. “We bring them in to let them know we haven’t forgotten about them,” said one volunteer. “We give them Thanksgiving dinner. We have music out here.”
