Alonzo Mourning inspires with his book, “Resilience”

Alonzo Mourning is seen as larger than life– an idol, a legend, the GOAT! At Overtown Youth Center however, though admired and loved, Alonzo is the mentor, the leader and the force of change, service and love. Alonzo welcomes every opportunity to provide insightful lessons and guidance to our students.

“You want to be successful in life, you got to give back. You’ve got to use your blessings to bless up.” –Alonzo Mourning

Alonzo lives and breathes what he preaches as his excitement to participate in our Lit & Learn book series at Booker T. Washington was apparent! Lit & Learn book series is a time for our students to read and discuss books that they can relate to and can be inspired from. Our students receive books that are specifically selected for them based on their gender, interests and age-appropriate subject matter. This is part of our inaugural gender specific curriculum where this month welcomed Alonzo as the special guest speaker and the book discussed was his National Bestseller, Resilience.  His Q&A forum allowed students to ask him personal questions from the book about loss, love, success, survival, service and resilience. His remarks were impactful and when he spoke you could feel a pin drop in the room because at the end who wouldn’t want to learn from the NBA Hall of Famer and mentor.

“Life is not a sprint, it’s a marathon.” Alonzo Mourning
